Go Skateboarding Day adalah gelaran tahunan yang diadakan oleh Asosiasi Internasional Perusahaan Skateboard (International Association of Skateboard Companies/IASC).
Awalnya bukan disebut “Go Skate Day”
Sebelum populer dengan sebagai Go Skateboarding Day atau Go Skate Day, perayaan ini bermula dari gelaran bernama All-Star City Skate Jam.
Gelaran tersebut dibuat pada tahun 2002 oleh Kernel Roach dan Bryan Chin di kota New York, Amerika Serikat. Founder Go Skate Day, Don Brown pun mengusung konsep acara serupa dengan skala yang lebih besar.
Bukan gimmick marketing
Gelaran ini sempat dituding sebagai metode pemasaran brand-brand skate besar. Padahal faktanya nggak begitu.
Pasalnya acara ini diadakan untuk merayakan skateboard dan memperkenalkan olahraga tersebut ke publik.
Don Brown menuturkan, awal mula ia mengadakan acara ini adalah untuk menciptakan kembali rasa bebas yang para skateboarder nikmati ketika berseluncur.
“Ketika itu, aku mengirimkan fax ke brand-brand skate lokal seperi Volcom dan Channel 1 dan Acme. ‘Ayo kumpul bareng dan nge-skate bareng, minum bir dan pulang,’” ujar Brown.
“Lalu sekitar 20 orang muncul dan main bareng. Menyenangkan rasanya ketika melihat mereka semua melepas penat dunia kerja dan berseluncur di papan skate.”
Nggak cuma ada di Amerika Serikat
Meski bermula di kota New York, antusiasme para pecinta skateboard di seluruh dunia telah membawa perayaan ini ke berbagai penjuru bumi.
Kini, acara tersebut pun rutin diadakan pada tanggal 21 Juni di Tokyo, Australia, Indonesia dan lebih dari 30 negara lain.
Bandung Skateboarder tidak gelar Skateboarding Day 2021.
Karena kondisi Kota Bandung yang siaga 1 covid 19, Skateboarder Bandung tidak gelar Skateboarding Day 2021. Karena acara ini berpotensi menghasilkan kerumunan kumpul-kumpul dan main skate bareng berkerumum di area umum.
